How often does LSS Hire?
LSS hires quarterly, but not for all positions. We gather preferences from our current staff in terms of what courses they prefer to support for the upcoming quarter. After we place our current tutors, we then open applications for those open positions. You can always find our open positions for the upcoming quarter on our Open Positions page.
When should I start applying for a position?
You should start inquiring or applying Week 7 of the previous quarter or term. For example, if it is the middle of Fall Quarter, you may want to start inquiring about positions for Winter Quarter. If it is the Summer, we start hiring then for the upcoming quarter, Fall. Application reviews usually end before the quarter begins, but vary each quarter diue to the Registrar's calendar. Check our hiring page for specific dates.
What are the Basic Qualifications?
- Must be a current undergraduate UCSC student.
- Must have cultural competency skills, help-seeking skills, and study skills.
- Must have taken the course before and done well in it (B or better).
- We prioritize students who have taken one year of college-level courses before (at UCSC or community college).
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Must have a minimum cumulative TERM GPA of 2.7 or higher.
- Upon hiring, must participate in the LSS Tutor Training Program
- Upon hiring, enroll in STEV 96 - Tutor Pedagogy Course
Do I have to Take the STEV-96 Tutor Pedagogy Course if I want to Apply? How mandatory is this course?
The STEV-96 Tutor Pedagogy Course is required for all new hires. Like teachers, all educators have to receive formal education to be successful. This class will be an opportunity for you to learn foundational topics in learning theory that you can apply to your sessions. You will also connect with other new LSS tutors and LSS staff.
If you are unable to take the course, we ask that you reapply the next quarter, as we hire quarterly and offer the course each quarter, as well.
